Tips for Attending a Dog Swim
To ensure a fun and stress-free experience for both you and your pup, here are a few tips for attending a dog swim event:
What to Bring
- Proof of vaccinations/dog license – Most of these events require proof of rabies vaccination; some may require proof of other vaccines or a Maryland dog license as well. Check the individual event’s requirements and make sure you have the necessary documentation.
- Fresh drinking water & a water bowl – To help your dog stay hydrated during all the fun and activity and so your dog has an alternative to drinking the pool water when they’re thirsty. But don’t worry if your furry friend does take a drink from the pool, as a small amount of pool water won’t hurt them.
- Towels – You’ll want to have a few on hand to dry off your pup after their swim.
- A life jacket (if needed) – If you have any concerns about your dog’s swimming ability, get them a doggie life jacket to stay safe.
Before the Dog Swim
- Register – Many of these events have a limited capacity and require preregistration.
- Know the rules – Familiarize yourself with the event’s specific rules and guidelines ahead of time, as policies can vary between different pool locations.
- Know your dog – Only attend a dog swim if your dog enjoys the water and is well-socialized and comfortable around other dogs and crowds of people. While many dogs will find these events fun and exciting, they may be too overwhelming for sensitive or timid dogs.
At the Dog Swim
- Don’t let your pup poop or pee in the pool – Give your dog a chance to potty outside before entering the pool and take them out for potty breaks as needed during the event.
- Don’t force your dog into the water – Let your dog get into the water at their own pace or just play near the pool if they’re uncomfortable.
- Watch your dog – Keep a close eye on your dog at all times while they’re in and around the pool. Watch out for signs that they’re tired, overstimulated, bothered by other dogs, or struggling to swim, and have them come out of the pool for a break as needed.
